Have You Ever Hidden Purchases And Other Money Questions

Have you seen the money related conversation starter cards circulating in the social media lately?

It is the Financial Service Council NZ teaming up with Hatch investment platform who brings us these downloadable cards that each have a money related question to answer.

I thought I’d do a post series of personally answering a few of these questions in each post and inviting you to share your own answer to the same question in the comments! You can download your own set here.

Is there such a thing as good debt?

In general it is regarded that good debt is when you take a loan against something that makes you money.

Mortgage on an investment property is a very common one, but also a business loan, some might even say that student loan is good debt because it is an investment towards increasing your earning power (in theory it should be anyway!).

So in theory, yes there is good debt. It might help you get to your goals faster.

Personally I think there is good debt and I will definitely be considering an investment property, then I would need another mortgage!

It will be interesting to see how I feel about that considering I really can’t wait to get rid of our home mortgage.

Have you ever hidden purchases
Have you ever hidden purchases from your significant other?

Have you ever hidden purchases?

Yes, birthday presents and Christmas gifts for sure! But I don’t think that’s what this question is really asking.

When I was younger and still living at home, I would on occasion hide how much treats I bought from my mum. It has always been a lot, sugar cravings are one my biggest weaknesses and undoings!

I’ve only ever hidden one purchase from my partner though. I was just too embarrassed to tell him I had bought two boxes of Trolli hamburger lollies for myself to eat!

To be honest, I don’t even know why I was so embarrassed to tell him, he wouldn’t have cared. He would have raised an eyebrow (like when I spent $90 on these amazingly delisious brownies), but beyond that, I don’t think he would have had a reaction.

Part of it was surely that I didn’t want to share the lollies haha!

Retirement might seem far away to some of us but it is important to think about it
Are you on track to have the kind of retirement you want?

What does the prospect of retirement look like to you?

I think it will look good!

I’m young, I have my investments started. I’m not earning much so my KiwiSaver isn’t growing super fast, but on top of that I have my other investment portfolio so I think by the time my retirement comes, I should be pretty good!

At this stage I’m not sure when I will want to retire, meaning I’m not really aiming to retire earlier than whatever the retirement age will be in 35+ years.

It is something that I am looking forward to though, be able to dedicate some time for hobbies and travel, volunteer for a charity.

My grandparents have been big on volunteering for the Red Cross ever since they retired, and it does bring them joy to be a part of something bigger than them and help those around them.

But unless something really major happens, I should be in a pretty good position when the time comes to retire.
