Review Of Mindful Money By Canna Campbell

Canna Campbell, aka Sugarmamma, was the first one to plant the idea of better financial future in my head, and the initial push for me to sort out my own finances. I owe a lot to her! She has expanded from online content to books, and here is my review of Mindful Money, her second book.

Who is Canna Campbell

Canna is an Australian financial adviser, who has a big online presence spreading financial knowledge the best she can.

She is the creator of The $1000 Project, which is a unique way to save money, and she has written a book about it. (My review of the book here, and experience using the project to save money here.)

Canna has a YouTube channel where she shares information about all things finances (and other areas of her interest), she’s active on Instagram and has a podcast called Fireplay.

What is Mindful Money about

Mindful Money is a guide to managing your money in the simplest way possible, all the while maximising your results in order to reach your unique goals.

The book is not only about budgeting, investing and money management, but also about mindset when it comes to money.

It aims to encourage and inspire you to take control of your money, and gives you the tools to do it.

The book contains the following sections:

  • Your Number (where you calculate what your financial goal is)
  • Money Mindset
  • Simple Yet Successful Share Portfolios
  • Your Money, Your Priorities
  • What About The Kids
  • And so much more

The book is full of examples and “how to”s that will help you get the most out of it.

Mindful Money mainly focuses on shares as a vehicle to grow your wealth, with one chapter dedicated to property as well.

Each chapter also has a handy summary at the end so you can quickly refer to them as a reminder or search for a specific topic to read it again.

On top the chapter summaries, Canna has also left space for you to write down your own calculations in the relevant chapters (like “Your Number”)

My review of Mindful Money

I thought that Mindful Money was very inspiring and I throughly enjoyed it! The book had really simple and easy to follow money management advise, and I especially enjoyed the section where you calculated your own target money number.

This number was then carried through the whole book, working as a reminder of your why which I found very powerful.

Mindful Money has a clear bias (which Canna admits) towards specific type of investment, which is dividend paying shares, and especially those that have what is called “franking credits” attached to them.

(These franking credits are a tax benefit in Australia to avoid paying tax twice on the same money and it is a unique benefit over there.)

This book made me realise that I was lacking a clear goal in my financial journey and gave me some tools to figure it out, ideas on how to get there and how to measure progress along the way.

I would definitely recommend this book to everyone, even if you already have an investment strategy in place. This book could be that extra inspiration you need, or a different point of view on an investment strategy.

Without a destination, the journey will be pointless
